speaking of peace...
(a pantoum)

speaking of peace, this Christmas day
wrestling with the concept as if the garment didn't fit
a voice on the radio urges listeners to wage peace, rather than war
as if the same old path would lead to a different door...

wrestling with the concept as if the garment didn't fit,
paying lip service to a god we secretly deny,
as if the same old path would lead to a different door,
despite all indications otherwise, what we seem to understand is war.

paying lip service to a god we secretly deny,
we award medals to our children who choose to die
despite all indications otherwise, what we seem to understand is war
and some cry out, "What is the word peace for??"

we award medals to our children who choose to die
when we could instead drop our arms and try
for some cry out, "What is the word peace for??"
We can answer ourselves: it is a different door.

For we could just drop our arms and try,
to see the threads that bind under one blue sky
to feel the lack of forever when war is constantly embraced,
and admit that a childs life is the essence of grace.

To see the threads that bind under one blue sky,
a voice on the radio urges listeners to wage peace, not war;
wrestling with the concept as if the garment didn't fit -
speaking of peace, this Christmas day.
